Overview

Confronting the hidden dangers of online dating — a campaign that turns awareness into action, making safety as visible and urgent as the connections we seek.

Safety Through Design and Awareness

In an age where swipes replace introductions and screens replace first impressions, “Know Who’s Behind the Screen” addresses a critical reality: you can never truly know who’s on the other side. This campaign blends bold visual storytelling with practical tools, transforming safety from an afterthought into a central part of digital connection. From provocative posters and condom packaging to Instagram activations and video narratives, the project challenges complacency, sparks dialogue, and empowers the LGBTQ+ community to approach online encounters with informed caution.

Man Walking

Challenge

A rising tide of deception, violence, and mistrust in digital dating — amplified by anonymity, lack of verification, and the false sense of security in familiar platforms.

Dating apps have revolutionised how people meet, but they also mask profound vulnerabilities. In platforms like Grindr, anonymity can protect privacy but equally enable deceit, exploitation, and even targeted violence. Reports of assault, theft, and harassment reveal the risks that lurk beneath curated profiles and instant connections. The challenge was to translate sobering statistics and documented cases into a visual and emotional language that cuts through digital noise — making safety urgent, relatable, and impossible to ignore, without alienating the very audience most at risk.

Solution

A multi-platform awareness campaign that turns everyday touchpoints into safety reminders, combining shock value with clear, actionable advice.

“Know Who’s Behind the Screen” uses the familiarity of dating app profiles and visual subversion to draw viewers in before confronting them with the risks of online encounters. Posters mimic app layouts but reveal dangerous historical figures as “matches,” while condom packaging carries blunt, unforgettable warnings like “Your Next Hookup Could Be Your Last.” Social media amplifies the message through Instagram stories, safety quizzes, live expert sessions, and influencer partnerships, while a central campaign video juxtaposes the hope of connection with the reality of deception. Every element is designed to be impossible to scroll past — sparking conversation, building awareness, and offering tools for safer choices.

Woman In The Garden

Creative Direction

Bold, disruptive, and emotionally charged — a design language that transforms caution into a cultural conversation.

The campaign’s creative approach hinges on contrast: familiarity versus danger, attraction versus threat. Stark typography, high-contrast colour palettes, and provocative copywriting make the message unmissable. Profile layouts lure the viewer into a sense of recognition before delivering the unsettling twist. The tone is direct, inclusive, and unflinching — balancing empathy for the community with a refusal to downplay risks. Every touchpoint reinforces the manifesto: that knowing who you engage with online isn’t paranoia, it’s survival. By weaving design, storytelling, and safety education together, “Know Who’s Behind the Screen” reframes online dating not just as a space for connection, but as one where vigilance is a shared responsibility.
